This is a bog, as in a peat bog! A trench is marked out on the peat to about the width of a swimming pool lane (just one lane) and its length is made to be 60 yards. When the peat is removed from this trench, just murky mucky water is left in the trench. It is through this that the competitors have to race.
Snorkel, mask and fins are the order of the day, plus a wet suit. On go, the competitor (one at a time) races (fins like crazy!) up the trench lane and back as fast as possible….. Fastest time wins.
The International Extreme Bog Snorkelling Championships attracts competitors from all over the world. There are different categories including juniors, fancy dress, women’s and men’s. The winner is entered in the Guinness Book of Records.
It takes place in a bog on the outskirts of Llanwrtyd Wells, in Wales, on the August Bank Holiday Monday.
